The New Indian Express is owned by Express Publications (Madurai) Ltd. and is headquartered at Chennai. Till 1999 it was published as Indian Express but after a split among the owners of India express the southern editions of the newspapers were rechristened as the New India Express. Other publications from the group include The Sunday Standard, Indiavarta, Dinamani, Kannada Prabha, AP Weekly, Andhra Parabha, Cinema Express, Malayalam Vaarika.

The newspaper both in its old avatar and new avatar is known for its anti-establishment tone. The famous run off that it had with the government in 1980s under the editorship of Arun Shourie is well documented in the history of India newspaper. The present editor-in-chief of the newspaper is the renowned journalist Prabhu Chawla. The paper is owned by Manoy Kumar Sonthalia. The newspaper has an impressive list of columnists which include Prabhu Chawla, Balbir Punj, Arun Nehru, Soli Sorabjee, S Gurumurthy, V Sudarshan, Shilpa dhar-Kamath to name a few.

History of The New Indian Express News Paper :

Though the first edition of The New Indian Express was printed on 13th August 1999 after its rechristening it can trace back its history to 1931. The newspaper was first published in Chennai in 1931 by Perumal Varadarajulu Naidu who sold the same to Swaminathan Sadanand. Sadanand roped in Ramnath Goenka as a partner and after a bitter struggle between the two for ownership Ramnath Goenka became the owner. In 1944 the group bought the Mumbai English daily Morning Mirror which became the Mumbai edition of the paper in 1946. In 1951 the Delhi based India news Chronicle was taken over becoming the Delhi edition of the newspaper. In 1953 the headquarters of the group was shifted to New Delhi.
