The Hindi daily newspaper Punjab Kesari is published from various locations in the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The paper is owned by Punjab Kesari group. The group publishes two more newspapers – Hind Samachar in Urdu and Jag Bani in Punjabi. The head office of the group is in Jalandhar.
Punjab Kesari group has bravely stood to his stand against terrorism in Punjab despite having a heavy price for the same. The founders Lala Jagat Narain and Romesh Chandra along with more than 50 staff members have been assassinated over the years for writing against the terrorism in Punjab. The group has been a Shaheed Parivar Trust since 1983 and even today it helps the families who have been affected by terrorism. The chief editor of the newspaper is Vijay Kumar Chopra
History of Punjab Kesari Newspaper :
Punjab Kesari was started in 1965 by a freedom fighter Lala Jagat Narain, who had served as the personal security guard of the famous freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai. He was helped in the venture by his eldest son Romesh Chandra. The newspaper came into existence to cater to the demands of Hindi speaking people in Punjab.
The newspaper started its first edition in 1965 in Jallandhar. For the next 25 years it was the only edition published and it started its Ambala edition in 1991. The newspaper has greatly expanded since 2004. In 2004 it launched its editions in Palampur and Ludhiana. Panipat and Hissar editions were launched in 2006 while the Jammu edition came up in 2007. The Mohali edition started printing in 2008. In 2009 the paper entered into the capital of Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh as well as Shimla the capital of Himachal Pradesh.
The newspaper has a circulation of about 3.5 lakhs on weekdays which goes up to 4.25 lakhs on Sundays.
